CAPTION PRINTED BELOW PICTURE: 'Oléron - L'Ile Lumineuse. Campus. IBM Division Systèmes d'Information. Séminaire IC-ID du 14 au 18 mai 84 - Ile aux Idees'

A bird's eye view poster for an IBM seminar - then the biggest tech company in the world - at the dawn of the personal computing age. The seminar was held on Île d'Oléron, France, from May 14 to 18 1984. This event was organized by IBM's Information Systems Division, focusing on IC-ID (Integrated Circuit - Integrated Design). Île d'Oléron is often called "L'Ile Lumineuse" (The Luminous Island) due to its sunny climate. The theme, "Île aux Idées" (Island of Ideas), suggests a focus on innovation and creativity. The poster likely served both as a promotional piece for the seminar and as a commemorative item for attendees, reflecting the event's professional focus and the island's inviting atmosphere. The poster was published during IBM's heyday as the largest tech company in the world; the IBM PC had been introduced in 1981, since when the market for these machines had exploded. The integrated circuit industry was enjoyed rapid technological advancement. The Intel 80286 chip, used in IBM's widely adopted PC/AT was introduced in 1982, and the Motorola 68020 was released in 1984.
