Thomson, John

John Thomson (fl. 1804-1837) was an Edinburgh publisher. Best known for his "New General Atlas" (First edition published 1817, with maps dated from 1814; second edition 1830), and "The Atlas of Scotland" (1832), The Scottish atlas bankrupted him - the trustee for his creditors had to pay the engravers to enable it's completion. He reacquired the plates in 1831 but went bankrupt again in 1835. His maps were engraved by Thomas Clerk, William Dassauville, Nathaniel Rogers Hewitt, James and Robert Kirkwood, John & George Menzies, Edward Mitchell, John Moffat, Samuel John Neele, Robert Scott, James Wyld (qv), Edwin Butterworth, Sidney Hall (qv), William Home Lizars (qv). We have a good stock of maps from both editions of the General Atlas, and the Atlas of Scotland.
