Wyld, James

James Wyld (1790-1836), was a London-born mapseller. He was apprenticed to William Faden (qv) in 1804, took over his business in 1823, and followed in his footsteps in becoming Geographer to the King, and to the Duke of York. He was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1830. He contributed a number of maps to John Thomson's "New General Atlas" (qv). He left his business to his son, also James Wyld, who became Geographer to Queen Victoria and HRH Prince Albert, and whose publications included Murchison’s Geological map of England and Wales in 1843 for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK).
